When the city was busy partying celebrating its 650th anniversary at the Festival of Diversity in West Germany, on Friday night of August 23rd, a male was seen to go on a stabbing rampage which left three dead and eight severely injured. At first, the male was unidentified and the German police arrested a young boy of 15 years claiming that this boy had prior knowledge of the knife attack. Two female witnesses overheard a conversation between the boy and an unidentified male which referred to the bloodshed, according to the Officials but later it was verified that the young boy was not the attacker.
Although on Saturday the Islamic State militant group claimed that they are taking responsibility for the attack they have not provided any further evidence to support this claim. On their news site, the extremist group said that the attacker had targeted the Christians ‘to avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.’ This claim also could not be verified independently either. The festival was supposed to carry on from Friday to Sunday with several stages in central streets offering attractions such as live music, cabaret, and acrobatics but the attack taking place in front of one stage has put fear and shock in the minds of the residents.
The festival was canceled as the police looked for clues in the cordoned-off square. Right after the horrific incident, people alerted the police regarding a man assaulting the people at the celebration with a knife on the city’s central square, the Fronhof. The casualties included two men aged 67 and 56 and a woman aged 56 years. According to the Officials, it seemed that the attacker deliberately aimed for his victims’ throats. Finally, an asylum-seeking 26-year-old Syrian male came forward and claimed to be the attacker. Duesseldorf police said in a joint statement with the prosecutor’s office that the man ‘stated that he was responsible for the attack.’
The 26-year-old suspect has been named by the German prosecutors as Syrian national Issa AI H who is being accused of being ‘a member of a terrorist organisation abroad’ with prosecutors saying that the suspect shares the ‘ideology of Islamic State’. The suspect has been charged with three counts of murder, attempted murder, and dangerous bodily harm in eight cases. According to official reports, the 26-year-old Syrian male who had applied for asylum handed himself into police following a large-scale overnight manhunt involving several police forces and special units.
