UK’s biggest popular music prize, The Brit Awards 2023 took place on Saturday and Harry Styles won the top awards in the event. However, the singer made sure to talk about his privileges when won the prize for a supposedly gender-neutral category where no other female artists were featured.

Harry made multiple appearances on the stage as he won awards for album of the year, artist of the year, song of the year for the hit single ‘As It Was’, and lastly the best pop/R&B act. With so many awards in a single night, the singer could not help but say, “This night has been really, really special to me and I will never forget it.” He further added, “I’m so so proud to be a British artist in the world out there.”

The music ceremony has arranged a gender-neutral main prize for British artist of the year for the second year which was introduced in 2022 for artists like Sam Smith who are identified as non-binary. On the contrary, the category consisted of an all-male shortlist this year. During his acceptance speech, Harry did not forget to mention this controversial list by naming the women artists who were originally shortlisted for the category, but could not make it to the finals.

Referring to Rina Sawayama, Charli XCX, Florence Welch, Mabel, and Becky Hill; Harry Styles said, “I’m really really grateful for this and I’m very aware of my privilege up here tonight so this award is for Rina, Charli, Florence, Mabel and Becky”. He won the Grammy award for album of the year for ‘Harry’s House’ which was the biggest-selling album in the United Kingdom last year. Harry gave off a sarcastic tone while saying, “this doesn’t happen to people like me very often” during the acceptance speech at the Grammy.

Critics of the industry have well dug into the matter and indicated that being a white 29-year-old Englishman, Harry hardly falls in the category of an underprivileged artist. On the other hand, The Brit Awards chairman Damian Christian said that it is “disappointing to see the lack of female representation” while blaming it on the big female stars who made a lack of eligible 2022 releases.

While talking about privileges, pop queen Beyonce has won awards for international artist of the year and best international song categories. However, she did not attend the ceremony in person. Hopefully, The Brit Awards will be more careful about their nominations.
