AR Rahman Shares The Turning Point Of His Career, “’I Was No Longer Called A South Indian”

Musical magician AR Rahman has changed the musical scene in Bollywood forever and he has recently admitted how the career took shape. The movie ‘Taal’ is scheduled to be re-released on September 27 this year and ahead of it, the music director of the film, Rahman shared a few words.

The Tamil music director who created an accomplished career as a composer agreed to the fact that Taal’ was a turning point on his musical career that allowed him to reach Ran-Indian audience. The man who set standards for the majority of the music industry in India also admitted to the fact that Bollywood helped him gain international fame.

Rahman has worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the musical works for Bombay Dreams. With his music creations for movies like ‘Roja’, ‘Bombay’, ‘Dil Se’and many others; the music director could reach a broader audience around the world, including India as well. The soundtrack for ‘Taal’ was presented to Lloyd Webber which offered him an opportunity to work in Bombay Dream. Rahman proudly said, “I was no longer called a ‘South Indian, doing only Tamil music’ and all that.”

He further added that the Bollywood films helped him to create an impact in the market even though most of the movies have a similar soundtrack to the Tamil movies. It is the audience base that allowed him to gain international fame. Rahman also highlighted the fact, that movies like ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ are an embodiment of pure Punjabi music and these are the movies that inspire him to create more regional work embraced through the movies.

His experience with Subhash Ghai helped him to be a part of Bollywood which is consumed by most people around India and the world. Their interesting journey of working together started with a personal invitation through fax and later on, that turned into a big leap into the Bollywood Industry.

The maestro also shared about working for a movie named ‘Shikhar’ which never got released. Learning the language ‘Hindi’ allowed him to do more experimentation with music and ‘Taal’ was his first major work of that. Whether it is receiving Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire or participating in international music videos; Rahman has always made his country proud and truly proved that he is not a South Indian, but rather an Indian.
