Nikita Gandhi Claimed To Have Learned A Lot About The Profession From A R Rahman

To celebrate the auspicious occasion of Teacher’s Day on September 5th, singer Nikita Gandi gave an interview where she shared about her teacher’s influence on her singing career. As her teacher, Gandhi established the name of the Indian music maestro A R Rahman, and talked about how he became one of the biggest influences on her personal and professional life.

While asking about whether Nikita considers Rahman her guru, she replied, “AR Rahman is one of the biggest influences in my life.” “He is like a mentor and a guide for me in the industry. And I think the most important reason why I consider him like a teacher more than an artiste that I’ve collaborated with, is because, I’ve sort of briefly been associated with his institute. I’ve spent a lot of time working with him on various projects, not just the film, commercial stuff, but I’ve watched him compose and record,” she continued.

The interviewer also asked Nikita about her learning experience while touring together with the music composer. Nikita replied to that question by saying, “He has recorded me in person right from my first song to my first Bollywood song. There’s been so much work with him, right from singing in background scores for films to doing Hollywood projects and singing in a 100-piece orchestra with him on tour. So, I really have learned a lot more about the profession of singing, of recording, of being an artiste overall, because of him. I think that’s why he’s such a big part of my life as a teacher.”

The next question was about the Indian musical composer and record producer’s involvement when it comes to teaching music to Nikita Gandhi. To which the ‘Qaafirana’ replied, “He was not a teacher at KM Music Conservatory, but he has been a teacher to me in a sense that I’ve just learned a lot from him and spent a lot of time with him while he makes music. So, well, I wouldn’t say nuances of music, but I think overall how, what kind of work ethic, music ethic one should have, temperament one should have, this constant curiosity to keep learning new things and to keep evolving. Every time he meets me, he’d ask me what’s next, what new are you up to? He loves people who are ever evolving. And I agree, it is the best thing! The worst thing that an artist can do is get complacent and not evolve. So, I think that’s one of the biggest lessons that I’ve learned from him.”

Gandhi also shared an incident in the interview that really moved her. The ‘Jugnu’ singer recalled, “There was this one time that he scolded me. It was actually a misunderstanding. I just didn’t have the heart to tell him that I wasn’t briefed about the song. I was waiting for many hours in the studio and then he came and started recording me and I didn’t know what I was supposed to record and I think he didn’t know that. He wasn’t informed about that and so he started sort of scolding me saying, ‘when you enter the studio, you should be on it and, it should be your objective to just be focused on the music and learning the music and learning the music and learning the piece so that you don’t waste time in the studio!”
