Blue Origin has decided to send an all-female crew to the N-31 mission this spring, and Katy Perry will be one of them. The award-winning singer is going to space with a diversified crew on the New Shepard rocket.

The mission is scheduled to take place this spring, and it will be led by Lauren Sánchez, who is also the partner of Blue Origin’s billionaire founder Jeff Bezos. Lauren has done a great job in selecting this
crew which includes scientists, journalists, and celebrities.

Blue Origin said in a statement, “Katy is honored to be a part of Blue Origin’s first all-female crew and hopes her journey encourages her daughter and others to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively.”
The crew will also include, film producer Kerianne Flynn, CBS co-host Gayle King, STEMBoard CEO and former rocket scientist at NASA, Aisha Bowe, and bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen.

They are all set to launch from a West Texas pad in a suborbital spaceflight. This will be the first-ever female-only crew ever since Valentina Tereshkova from the Soviet Union became the first woman in space in 1963.

Blue Origin’s all-female NS-31 mission is announced right after two days of its successful flight of space tourist mission NS-30. It includes people like physicist entrepreneur Elaine Chia Hyde, Spanish TV host Jesús Calleja, reproductive endocrinologist Richard Scott, and hedge fund partner Tushar Shah.

While a journey to space sounds amazing, it is only a short trip that is meant for space exploration. Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket is specially designed with reusable booster and crew capsule built which
can take passengers up in suborbital space for very short trips. The rocket flies at 62 miles (100 kilometers) above sea level which is considered to be the border of space, called the Kármán line.

Each of these space missions lasts somewhere around 11 minutes and passengers can feel up to 4 minutes of weightlessness along with the beautiful view of Earth from space through the large windows of the rocket. The rocket’s capsule is not built for orbiting Earth and it can only perform short
trips to the Kármán line. The best feature of this rocket is that no pilot is required to launch this beast as it flies autonomously.

New Shepard missions are currently quite popular among celebrities and many of them have utilized this golden opportunity to visit space. Previously, former NFL player Michael Strahan and Star Trek actor William Shatner visited space on a Blue Origin mission.
