This September might be the witness to an epic turn in the Hollywood music industry as Lana Del Ray and Quavo have decided to work together to create a new album, specifically the 10th studio album of Lana Del Ray capturing the essence of country roads and lifestyle. This album is said to be of the country-trap genre inducing the magical vocals and lyricism of Lana Del Ray and the enticing rapping verse of Quavo.
The global superstar and sensual diva might have already given a hint regarding the name of the album when she said in an interview, “When I gave Jack Antonoff his award for best producer of the year and I said Welcome Nashville to Hollywood, and Hollywood welcome Nashville, ‘cause the music business is gone, gone country…then the next week, three major artists announced big country albums, so where’s Lasso going? I really have no idea”. So, to fans, the name might be Lasso. Well, if it is that then they are quite right. In an interview in February, Lana Del Ray expressed her interest in exploring the Western genre in her upcoming album, and ‘Lasso’ is the result.
The album deals with a lot of topics that are common in every part of the country but with a touch of old country roads resonating with her 2017 project ‘Lust for Life’. The track ‘Tough’ has already gained worldwide attention and love, dealing with different topics like love, struggles, relationships, intimacy, loss, perseverance, death, and pain. The lyrics strongly suggest the resilience needed to go through the tough times in life which eventually makes a person tough. The comparison of herself with hard old leather boots, a .38 caliber gun, and hard liquor is a way of portraying the becoming of a tough woman while she grew up in the countryside. The term ‘red dirt’ is commonly associated with the theme of Western iconography which is referred to by a popular country music genre that originated in Oklahoma and the name of which had been inspired by the color of the soil found in the southern state.
In the last lines sung by Lana Del Ray compares herself with a diamond shining in the rough which again displays that hard times give birth to tough and resilient people which is the only way to survive in this world. Quavo in his verses explains the struggle of pursuing a career as a hip-hop artist in Atlanta and also his struggles in relationships as he was crawling through the mud. In the video ‘Tough,’ the artists are seen as a romantic couple driving down the countryside, hooting shotguns and embracing each other amidst the struggles of life as they find peace with each other. The video was released on digital streaming platforms on 3rd July 2024.
