The ‘About damn time’ singer has won her first Emmy award for outstanding competition program at the 74th Annual Emmy Awards for the series, ‘Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls’. It broke the four-year streak of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’.
The series is about the singer’s search for her backup dancers that has been both a commercial success and gained critical acclaim. While being on stage to accept this prestigious recognition, Lizzo broke down and got emotional. During her acceptance speech, she said how much this award means to her and proceeded to explain how when she was a child she wanted to see someone like her on stage, “All I Wanted to See Was Someone Fat Like Me, Black Like Me” she said. The visibly emotional and happy singer then talked about going back to her childhood and telling her younger version to wait patiently as she will be up there one day. In tears, she also asked the Big Grrrls to join her on stage and showed gratitude toward them.
She acknowledged the efforts made by her backup dancers by saying that even though getting the trophy is nice but she is really emotional for those people who have stood beside her and worked as hard as she did. “The stories that they shared, they’re not that unique. They just don’t get told. Let’s just tell more stories” Lizzo said in tears.
“Make some noise for my Big Grrrls. I love you so much. God bless y’all. This is for the big girls” She said while acknowledging the dancers’ contribution to her successful popstar life.

This is not the first time since the singer has been vocally open to the oppressed in society. Since gaining popularity with her worldwide famous ‘Truth Hurts’, this grammy winner has always tried to acknowledge and put forward the struggle of black women. She has also championed the LGBTQ+ community and has become an icon for being size inclusive.
The series ‘Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls’ follows the singer’s search for plus-size backup dancers and casting them for her upcoming tour.
This year has been an eventful year for Lizzo which started with her launching a size-inclusive brand ‘Yitty’ which is a shapewear brand and carries sizes from XS through 6X. She also released her fourth studio album ‘Special’ on July 15th for which the singer is currently preparing to go on tour.
