Lorde Live Debuted Her New Song “What Was That” at Washington Square Park

When planned performances are dispersed by the police and authority, artists need to make their way by making impromptu appearances and that is what Lorde has done gracefully. This singer-songwriter has live debuted her brand new song “What Was That” at Washington Square Park and fans went crazy over it. The video footage for the debut has already gone viral.

Lorde stood on wooden a platform and made some minimal speaker arrangements to perform the song “What Was That” and it was enough for everyone to gather around. It almost felt like the singer was busking with her fans but it also included a bit of dancing other than music,

The singer initially shared a message for her fans that reads, “Meet me in the park Tonight 7pm -xx.” However, when it was around 7 pm, Lorde shared a post on Instagram saying, “I am truly Amazed by how many of you showed up !!!” it read, in part. “But they’re telling me you gotta disperse … I’m so sorry.” Her pop-up appearance was shut down by the police and the park rangers.

However, the crowd was not satisfied and nor was Lorde. They stayed for the next hour and soon it was time for Dev Hynes from Blood Orange to arrive while blasting “What Was That” on speaker. Lorde arrived somewhere around 9 pm and made sure to thanked audiences and everyone who gathered.

The lyrics for the new track go like “I’m missing you/And all the things we used to do/MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up/We kissed for hours straight but baby, what was that?/I remember saying then/This is the best cigarette of my life/Well I want you just like that.” Evidently, the tracks resonated with the crowd and they cheered as the singer performed at the park.

The track “What Was That” was first teased via a snippet posted on TikTok where the artist could be seen walking around Washington Square Park. She recently appeared at the Coachella in week one during Charlie XCX’s set. Lorde’s last amazing project was ‘Solar Power’ which was released back in 2021. The latest collaboration between Charlie XCX and Lorde was for the track “Girl, So Confusing” which became one of the top 10 tracks in The 100 Best Songs of 2024.
