Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival has recently filed a lawsuit against the English pop-rock band The 1975. The frontman of the group Matty Healy, protested against Malaysia’s anti-LGBTQ law last July. Now, after his protest, the festival is looking for $2.4 million as the festival was stopped. Later that, the music festival organizers Future Sound Asiafiled documents regarding all the prohibitions neglected by The 1975. In 2016, the band performed at the music festival and they were instructed about all the prohibitions. However, they didn’t follow any of them.
The last summer too, the organizers took the same initiative, but it wasn’t fruitful. The band has broken many regulations which Future Sound Asia is not willing to approve. The band did things like smoking, swearing, taking off their clothes, drinking, and making comments on political elements. And they cannot do any of them on the stage while performing. In addition to that, the Malaysia Central Agency also pointed out ‘kissing, kissing a member of the audience or carrying out such actions among themselves’, which is not acceptable.
After all the instructions, The 1975 members agreed to all their regulations and settled for $350,000 to be a part of Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival. At first, Foreign Filming and Performance by Foreign Artistes (PUSPAL) rejected the band’s application because in 2018 Matty Healy’s addiction came out. However, as the other members of the group agreed to do such things and follow ‘all local guidelines and regulations’, their application got approved.
Even after all these, the lawsuit decided that The 1975 ‘should not perform at the music festival’ and said they changed their mind and gave their final decision. Later, the band decided to go for ‘a completely different setlist’ and willingly did an ‘act in way that were intended to breach the Guidelines’. Matty Healy then gave a ‘provocative speech’ and participated in a ‘long pretend passionate embrace’ with the bassist of the group Ross MacDonald. It is coming to know that they did it ‘with the intention of causing offense and breaching the regulations and the terms of the agreement’.
Apart from this, the band members also sneaked a bottle of wine onto the stage to ‘have easy access’. After that, Matty Healy was acting ‘in a drunken way’ while smoking cigarettes and ‘appear[ing] to vomit on the stage and/or grunt and spit excessively including towards the audience’. Later, when Healy was instructed to stop the performance by PUSPAL, he was ‘very aggressive’ and ‘swearing at them and others’. Due to all these unacceptable behaviors, Future Sound Asia filed a lawsuit against the band. However, The 1975 hasn’t made any comment on that.
