When the word metalcore comes to mind, people usually think of vocalists or musicians in dark and scary makeup and clothes but Hanabiefrom Tokyo, Japan is completely the opposite of what the stereotypical thinking is. This group of astonishingly talented girls looks nothing like a metalcore band with their anime-like vibes and colorful makeup and clothes and tiny frames but people are often taken aback by the devilish screams these girls are capable of creating while creating a fun and vibrant set of music with their creativity. Their music is one of its kind and they seem to own it with a proud face. Recently Hanabie has announced to release of their new single ‘Metamorphose’ which fans are anticipating to be a smashing hit.
After starting the band in 2015, they have released two studio albums called ‘Girl’s Reform Manifest in 2021 and ‘Reborn Superstar!’ which was released in 2023. But their recent single ‘Pardon me, I Have To Go Now’ which was released last year gave them the break of a lifetime, scoring 1.7 million views on YouTube and 5 million views on TikTok. After this, it is safe to say that Hanabie never had to look back again as they skyrocketed from there. They gained fame more rapidly in the US and EU rather in their home country Japan.
Yukina, the vocalist of the band talked about this rapid growth of their band in an interview saying, ‘Of course at first, with everything developing so fast, there were times we thought, ‘Is this a dream? But at the same time, it gradually grew on us that this is really happening. From the start, we believed in our music and our potential, and now we’re at a point where we have the realization that our music is finally spreading and we want to push it further. So, now it’s not like a dream, it’s our reality, and we want to keep this going and take it as far as we can.’
The Metal Hammer Magazine expressed that this band was big on the fun on their debut at the UK’s Download festival in June saying, ‘Giddily skipping between guttural metalcore, sugary pop, 90s rock and the occasional burst of high-octane rap, it was a relentless 30-minute set, big on fun, there were moments of slick synchronicity between the four-piece as the band unapologetically leaned into Babymetal-inspired territory, but there was also a whole lot of playful chaos as well.’
