Michael Nesmith the singer, songwriter, and guitarist of the popular 1960s pop boy band has died at the age of 78.
In an interview, his family has said that he died in the morning at his own home in the presence of his family. He died of natural causes as per his family.
Nesmith was born in 1942 in Houston. He was well known for the boy band established in 1966 the Monkees. He was a member of the band along with Peter Tork, Davy Jones, and Micky Dolenz.
In 1970 he left the band and started working solo. He has done a lot of solo travel shows and continued working as a country-rock artist. But after a few years, he joined Monkees again and simultaneously works as a solo artist too. After that, he used to travel for the band and solo both. In the ’70s Nesmith was active as a producer too.
After coming out of the band in 1969 Nesmith turned his full attention to country music. But none of his albums with the First National Band rose higher than no. 143 on the national charts. But in the 1970 single ‘Joanne’ reached at the no. 21. After that, he used to be called the pioneer of country music. In 1977 he promoted his single song ‘Rio’ with a unique video that got a lot of play in the UK and Australia.
Some of his impeccable works are: ‘Last Train to Clarksville’, ‘Big Sky’, ‘Sweet Young Thing’ etc. Words will fall short in front of his work.
In 1982 Nesmith won a Grammy Award for the collection ‘Elephant Parts’.
Micky Dolenz the only left Monkees had said ‘heartbroken’ after the demise of Nesmith who was his partner and a dear friend.
He tweeted that ‘I’m so grateful that we could spend the last couple of months together doing what we loved best – singing, laughing, and doing shtick’. On November 14 they have last performed together on stage.
Nesmith was divorced thrice and survived by three sons and a daughter.
