The annual 65th Grammys Awards was in full swing on Sunday as it included shocking events, historic wins, and even tribute to artists. However, Grammys are no stranger to controversies and this year was no different. Once again Beyonce was in the run to win the most prestigious category of the night and she lost, again.
The artist became a part of history as she became the most-awarded artist of all time, after securing her 32nd win in the win, yet, did not leave home with the Album Of The Year award. This year after nominating the queen Bey of the music industry, there was a chance for the committee to honor the powerhouse of talent with the marquee award which they missed. Especially when it was a night for the singer to become the most-awarded artist, which she did later in the evening. Instead of making Beyonce the winner of the “AOTY” category, the award was given to Harry Styles for his hit 2022 album ‘Harry’s House’. The album was on the run with Adele’s 30, ABBY’s ‘Voyage’, Beyonce’s ‘Renaissance’, Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’, Coldplay’s ‘Music Of The Spheres’, etc.

Even the British Pop star seemed shocked when the winner was announced as he was competing with the industry giants like ABBA, Adele, Bad Bunny, Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Lizzo, Kendrick Lamar, and Beyoncé. While accepting the honor on stage, the singer showed gratitude by saying, “This is really, really kind. I’m so, so grateful… I’m just so — This doesn’t happen to people like me very often. And this is so, so nice. Thank you very, very much.” This particular line where he mentioned things not happening to people like him was the one that sparked the most controversy on the internet and drew criticism.
Many people online have interpreted his words as an example of white privilege, especially when Beyonce lost for the fourth consecutive time to someone who is white. The Beyhive (the official fanbase name of Beyonce) have taken offense by the fact that despite being the most-awarded artist in history, she has yet to win album of the year and has lost every time she was nominated to white musicians. Especially since no black woman has won in the category since Lauryn Hill in the late ’90s.
