Millions of people were left shocked today as Dmitry Svirgunov, popularly known as Dima Nova, who founded the electronic group Cream Soda in 2012 with Ilya Gadayev and was later joined by singer Anna Romanovskaya., was found dead at the age of 34. The artist made headlines when he criticized the alleged $1.3 billion mansion of Russian president Vladimir Putin in his song. According to reports, the singer fell to his death when he and his friends were trying to cross the Volga River. The announcement of the tragedy was made through the band’s Instagram account.

According to reports, the artist fell through the thin ice while trying to cross the Volga River in the Yaroslavl region with his friends and his brother Roma. Two of his friends were rescued from under the ice while a third passed away in the ambulance. The group later posted photos of Dima Nova and his friend Kiselev declaring, “An official identification took place today at 9:00. Dima and Goshi are no more.”

Since its formation, the band has released four albums and has worked with artists like Feduk, Alyona Sviridova, Antokha MC, and Alexander Gudkov and bands like Loud and Khleb. Their song ‘No More Parties’, released in 2019, and their video for ‘Crying to Techno’, released the next year, went viral and won the trio a lot of acclaims. In 2017, the band released a song titled ‘Volga’ that included lyrics about sinking and going “under the bottom”, and gained notoriety when the Russian comedian Alexander Gudkov, in 2021, put up a video using their song parodying Putin for his construction of the alleged $1.3 billion “Putin’s Palace”.

Cream Soda was prompted to write the song ‘Aqua Disco’ in retaliation when the president’s detractors commented that the luxurious mansion has a hookah lounge and a room reportedly described as an “aquatic disco”, thereby capitalizing on that room. The lyrics pointedly criticize Putin making direct references, as seen in the lyrics: “You are inviting me to the movies and for a couple of glasses. Inviting me to breathe in the shisha smoke, to chill on the covers, to watch the sunset from your marble boudoir/ You just don’t understand that it is very old-school.”

The song became a popular anthem during the protests against Putin during the Ukrainian conflict. These protests eventually came to be known as the “Aqua Disco Parties”, such was the popularity of the song.
