A TikTok video was circulating on social media a platform which was created to body-shame the iconic singer and actress Selena Gomez when she made an appearance at the premiere of Emilia Pérez at the American French Film Festival in Los Angeles. The singer had commented on that particular video but the content was soon deleted. The main focus of the now-deleted video was Selena’s pose while getting photographed. Even though the Wizards of Waverly Place was looking stunning in a slit black dress with ruched fabric, in many of the photographs her hand was placed around her torso which led many to believe that she was trying to hide her body in some way.
This eventually made the singer slam back on the body-shamming comments by making a point about how her primary concern is her health and not her looks. Through a social media post on Twitter, she explained how the whole video and comments have made her feel sick, in the post she wrote ‘This makes me sick. I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No, I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.’
According to renowned clinics, SIBO also known as Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth occurs ‘when there is an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine particularly types of bacteria not commonly found in that part of the digestive tract.’, Kaytee Hadley, a functional medicine dietitian, SIBO specialist, and founder of the insurance-based private practice Holistic Health and Wellness said.
Selena Gomez speaks out on trolls online speaking on her body/stomach:

She added, ‘SIBO is treatable, but it cannot be gotten rid of through a healthy diet alone and requires an individualized approach with a knowledgeable healthcare provider … I cannot stress enough the importance of working with a SIBO specialist, as treatment is not straightforward and can take many months of targeted interventions.’ By now, the whole world is aware of the health issues this young and vibrant superstar has to deal with and the fact that she is not afraid to share her side of the story is even more inspiring.
In an interview, Selena Gomez said, ‘I like to remind people that that is definitely nowhere close to where I am now. My mind was not right and chemically imbalanced, and it was really difficult. People were calling me a victim. That frustrates me, because being vulnerable is actually one of the strongest things you can do. That narrative is not going to take over my life. I’m grateful every day. And I have my days like everyone else, but I’m no victim. I just survived a lot. There isn’t a part of me that wants anyone to feel sorry for me.’
