Colombian sensation Shakira is in big trouble for the ongoing case about her tax evasion. The prosecutors in Spain have asked for a prison sentence that is over 8 years for her if proven guilty in the upcoming trial for her alleged tax fraud case.

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, also known as Shakira has been in the headlines recently for her alleged tax fraud case where she is facing a total of six charges. The famous singer, who has given several memorable hits like “Hips don’t lie” and the World Cup 2010 song “Waka Waka (This time for Africa)” has been accused of not paying taxes to the Spanish government and violating tax regulations between 2012 to 2014.

According to the Spanish prosecutors, the singer failed to pay 14.5 million Euros in total when she avoided personal and estate tax in those two years. On the other hand, the singer and her team are confident of her innocence which was reflected in their decision of refusing a settlement offer to close the deal earlier this week. The singer also states that she had already repaid the amount to the officials along with the interest.

The investigation against the Latin pop star started back in 2018. In the two years on which these charges are focused, Shakira was accused of living in Barcelona while she registered her official residence somewhere else. She has registered the Bahamas as her official residence during those years but Spanish prosecutors accused her of living in the country with her ex-partner Gerard Piqué. Reportedly she bought a house in Barcelona in 2012, where she was staying with Piqué and it became a family home for her.

Conferring to the country’s law, people who spent more than 6 months stay in the country are considered a resident of Spain for taxes. The team of prosecutors has developed their case based on the report of her visiting beauty salons, hairdressers, and medical clinics to prove that she has spent more than six months during that period.

The Spanish government demanded tax bills for her global income during that period. Although an official date for the trial has not been set yet, if proven guilty she has to pay a total of 20 million Euros including tax as a fine along with the 8 years “jail time”.
