A Barcelona court has ordered the singer to stand trial for six alleged tax crimes. The date of the initiation of the trial is not been determined yet. Spanish prosecutors have made their points clear either she is paying the amount or she is going to jail for at least 5 years. But she has been persistent to the point that she has not committed any taxing crimes.

The 45-year-old has repeatedly been denying these allegations. She said in a recent interview, “I am confident that I have enough proof to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favor”. Her legal them said in a statement that they will prove and innocence “by presenting [the] arguments at the appropriate time”.

She went for a complete trial, rejecting a deal offered by her prosecutors. To answer the burning question, as alleged by the prosecutors her residential status between 2012 and 2014 was not in Spain but elsewhere.

According to Spanish law, a person who has spent over 6 months in the country is considered a resident of Spain. And an on that ground they have to pay their taxes. But Shakira has said that she was not mainly living in Spain at that period of time. In July, prosecutors issued a document that claimed that she bought a house in Barcelona in 2012. And she and her boyfriend Barcelona footballer Gerard Piqué have been living there since then.

Her lawyers have said that her income was majorly based on international tours. And because of that, she has to stay a lot of time outside of Spain. Shakira said in an interview, “The Spanish tax authorities saw that I was dating a Spanish citizen and started to salivate. It’s clear they wanted to go after that money no matter what”.

She prominently declared that Spain has been her resident since 2015 and she has paid a sum of €17.2m in tax and leaving that she has no outstanding debts to the country. The couple has announced their separation after 11 years of their relationship and they had 2 sons together. One is 7 years old and another is 9 years old.
