Guaranteed to stop the world, even if just for a Smurf-Village Minute, is a Rihanna announcement. Today’s comes in the form of a trailer for a trailer: On X and Instagram, the mogul posted a 17-second clip teasing a (likely) full trailer for Paramount Pictures’ Smurfs. ‘In my blue era,’ she wrote in the caption with the shifty-eyes and blue heart emojis. In April 2023, she and the producers announced that she was voice-cast as Smurfette in the forthcoming live-action hybrid feature. Rihanna recently made The World’s Most Powerful Women list, put out by Forbes.

In the new clip, birds chirp and the camera zooms through what can only be described as a CGI take on a claymation Smurf Village, home of the blue little people created by Belgian animator Pierre Culliford (a.k.a. Peyo) in 1958. A dramatic rendition of The Smurfs’ theme song from the 1980s Hanna-Barbera cartoon rings out as the camera closes in on a small teal TV, on which an image of RiRi’s Smurfette character blowing a kiss appears with the words ‘Trailer tomorrow’ over her in (also blue) capital letters.

The film is set to premiere on July 18, pushed back from a previous release date of this upcoming Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14). The new movie follows a series of Smurfs films over the years, including 2011’s The Smurfs, 2013’s The Smurfs 2 and 2017’s Smurfs: The Lost Village. Deadline reports that directors Chris Miller and Matt Landon oversaw a voiceover cast that also includes Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, and Xolo Maridueña, along with Kurt Russell and John Goodman. In addition to starring in the film, the gorgeous goddess of the music industry, Rihanna will also be producing the animated feature alongside Jay Brown, Ty Ty Smith, and Ryan Harris.

In an interview, the music icon Rihanna said ‘This is a delight,’  of playing the ‘blue badass’ at CinemaCon 2023. ‘Getting to do animation is a fun journey for me. I get to show up in my PJs in my third trimester. I hope this gives me cool points with my kids one day.’ In addition to spending time with RZA and Riot, the two-year-old and nine-month-old sons she shares with A$AP Rocky, she also did a Recess Therapy interview with a seven-year-old named Miles last October.
