To the surprise of the whole music world, Grammy Awards have expanded the list of nominees at the last minute. By this last-minute expansion artists like Kanye West, Taylor Swift, and Lil Nas X seems to have been benefitted.

As per the report of the New York Times on Wednesday, West and Swift both were nominated in their categories and were added late in the nominations for the album of the year. The rapper Kanye West got nominations for the ‘Donda album’, and Swift got it for ‘Evermore’. In that category singers like Justin Bieber, Olivia Rodrigo, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, Doja Cat, H.E.R., Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, and Jon Batist, were already mentioned.

Even for the songwriters’ category, the last-minute addition brought Doja Cat for “Kiss Me More” in the list. The expansion could be seen in the category of the best new artist with Baby Keem and the composer Arooj Aftab.

The Times reported that it was easy to find out the names that were added late, as eight names from different categories were not there in the final list. While revealing the names of the nominees, the Recording Academy announced that they had expanded a few names in different categories billing the decision as a way to make room for more good music and as an appreciation of their performance.

The late inclusion of the nominees has already arisen many controversies about the reality of a prestigious award show like Grammy. Many people on Twitter now ask for a more transparent explanation for such sudden decisions.

Last year the Canadian singer The Weeknd said that he would boycott the awards after his album ‘After Hours’ failed to get a single nomination despite being one of the biggest commercial hits, critically acclaimed, and ruled the chart. The Weeknd, who is one of the most influential; artists declare the Grammy Awards to be corrupted.

In an interview with the Times, the Recording Academy’s CEO and President Harvey Mason Jr. said that they have been in the field for years, and even they have witnessed Latin Grammy Awards pushing the total number of nominees to twelve. Mason Jr. further denies that the inclusion of Kanye West and Taylor Swift was neither for any commercial reasons nor for flagging television ratings.
