Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer frontman confessed in an interview with Rick Beato that he has stolen ideas for songs from Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor.
In a latest video interview Tool’s frontman James Keenan admitted that he has stolen song ideas from Trent Reznor, the frontman of Nine Inch Nails. Maynard further confirmed that he has selectively stolen from Nine Inch Nails’ 1999 double album, titled ‘The Fragile’.
Keenan is globally famous as the frontman of not only tool but two other bands known as ‘A Perfect Circle’ and ‘Puscifer’. Recently, he appeared in a video interview with music producer and YouTuber Rick Beato for a 55-minute-long conversation.
Other than Nine Inch Nails’ 1999 album, Keenan also confirmed that he was “stealing from stolen goods” of Reznor to craft new tracks for A Perfect Circle. The reference made it clear that NIN’s work wasn’t made out of the blue either.
Keenan further said, “Professionals steal, right? And so, really looking at the work of people like PJ Harvey, Trent on The Fragile – he’s stealing shit all over that album, but I’m stealing from his stolen goods”.
Talking about his musical compositions, he said, “I wanted to hear more space in some of the A Perfect Circle stuff. So going back to my original influences of The Swans‘ early Holy Money and Greed albums, just the huge cavern of space that are in those albums.”
The utilization of left space is widely vivid in A Perfect Circle’s tracks which is also present in the case of The Swans. Keenan assured ‘’they’re not the same thing,” however there is a similarity in the waveforms. He further said, “that was the point of like leaving space, to let your brain keep going in the middle of the spaces.”
Keenan has also convinced this idea of leaving space to other band members such as drummer Josh Freese from A Perfect Cirlce. Talking about the contrasting metronomes, Keenan said, Again, stolen from Trent. Don’t tell him. Don’t watch this Trent.” Truly, Keenan made a humble confession that can make Trent nothing but happy at the moment.
