Olivia Rodrigo‘s unconventional performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards on Tuesday night left everyone in the audience confused. Briefly, after her initial soothing start, the stage started to malfunction. A lighting rig collapsed from the ceiling and a pyrotechnics exploded, the decorative trees on the stage were also falling. This was the time the singer was ushered backstage and a blue curtain covered half of the stage and Rodrigo emerged along with her backup dancers.
The entire fuss was intentional and one of her recent videos ‘Vampire’ has a similar sort of staging. Yet, the audience was still confused about whether the entire malfunctioning part was intentional or not. Yet, the concerning expressions of Selena Gomez (who looked stunning in her red dress, by the way) with widened eyes was holding one hand over her ear, during this transition moment of her performance made her a topic of meme.
While everyone was once again making her expressions viral, the singer-actor commented, “I heard a loud noise and it scared me,” underneath the BuzzFeed Celeb Instagram post on this incident and especially on her expression. People who have seen the live performance can also relate to this concerning expression and the loud noise Gomez has mentioned. This is not the first time Gomez has spoken about her expressions.
On sharing about the night she shared several Instagram stories including a candid moment with Taylor Swift, captioning it, “She looks stunning I look constipated,” adding a tinier ‘Typical” at the bottom. Yet she also shared a note saying, “I will never be a meme again. I’d rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much love.”
This was not the only incident netizens are pointing out; they are also mentioning her disgusted reaction and not choosing to clap when Chris Brown’s nomination was being announced. To this, Selena had the sleekest comment, “Who cares lol.” In various previous instances, she has spoken about these incidents. In one of her 2021 interviews, she said, “I say that because that’s a huge, significant part of why I feel like I’ve been as healthy as I have been.”
She added more, “I’m completely unaware of actually what’s going on in pop culture, and that makes me really happy. And maybe that doesn’t make everybody else happy, but for me, it’s really saved my life.” She continued, “ I felt like my thoughts and everything I was consuming revolved around a million different other people in the world saying good things and bad things.”
It was also a big night for the Only Murders In The Building star, as she and Nigerian singer and rapper Rema received the Best Afrobeats VMA for their “Calm Down” collaboration. The duo also got another nomination for the categories of ‘Song of the Year’ and Best Collaboration’.
