The Weeknd is back, bringing all the heat with his latest single ‘DancingIn The Flames’. With this release, he has officially given his fans a little taste of what his forthcoming album, a new era would look like. The Canadian pop-R&B star released the first official single on September 13th, where he was seen associating the risk of love with literal physical danger.

Last week, the singer revealed the cover and title of his forthcoming studio album, ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’. This will be his sixth studio album, ending the trilogy that began with the 2020 release of ‘After Hours’. This album also follows Abel’s 2022 release ‘Dawn FM’. ‘Dancing In The Flames’ came with a music video entirely shot on the latest iPhone, part of a promotional deal with Apple, streaming on YouTube. The song is about capturing the pure essence of love, it is about rush, it is about love that is as dangerous as it is invigorating. The Weeknd shows naked compassion for love, which is like chasing a feeling on a highway, fueled by the promise of something extraordinary and an adrenalin rush, even if it means it will end up in flames.

‘Dancing in the Flames’ makes a turn back to the lighter pop sound for The Weeknd. Especially following the more R&B-influenced singles that the singer released in the past few months, mainly to promote his debut HBO series, Sam Levinson-directed ‘The Idol’. This single has Max Martin and Oscar Holter as producers, the same creative minds behind ‘Blinding Lights’. Even though we could hear some changes in production and Abel’s intention to where he wants to take this sound, it is safe to say that he did not lose his signature touch. We have once again found the singer associating love with physical danger with lyrics like “I can’t wait to see your face/Crash when we’re switching lanes/My love’s beyond the pain.”

The heart of the track is all-consuming love. The music video showcases that the love starts as slow and light, and builds up to a car ride, just like the calm before the storm. If you look at the production, you will find 80s-inspired funk elements perfectly paired with the synth-pop sound that creates a hint of nostalgia. This also hints toward the fact that this intoxicating kind of love has always existed, something that is at the core of every human’s driving force. The single also fits right with The Weeknd’s signature theme and style, exploring the dark sides of love and passion. The track is surely reminiscent of his earlier releases, especially the past two projects of the trilogy. However, this time, the sound is more mature and gives listeners an introspective edge. It is like a thrilling ride where no one knows what is coming, but the end goal is the same, reaching the light source, the love, even if it means the ride will end his life.
